"The fact is that the pressures of our society today, the tributes we pay in blood - colonialism, neo-colonialism, even poverty in the lopsided order of the world - are largely the effects of the slave trade. In the trade, societies were ransacked, the land was gutted, its human loam was washed to the sea and its potential was stunted". These are the words of Kwadwo Opoku-Agyemang and are derived from his poetry anthology entitled 'Cape Coast Castle'.
No trip to Ghana is complete without a visit to Cape Coast Castle, arguably the most famous slave castle in West Africa. If you've read #Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi you'll know that this castle was featured in this novel, as the home of one of the protagonist's families during the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
